Mangrove Restoration in the Delta Region
Mangrove Restoration in the Delta Region presents a case study of UN-Habitat Myanmar’s community-led mangrove restoration efforts in Pyapon and Bogale Townships, implemented under the Myanmar Climate Change Alliance Phase 2 Programme (MCCA2). In response to significant deforestation and coastal degradation, the project supported the restoration of 125 acres of mangrove forest, actively engaging 252 local residents and benefiting over 6,000 people. Through a participatory approach, communities—particularly women and youth—took the lead in planning, establishing nurseries, planting seedlings, and strengthening climate resilience.
The publication showcases how nature-based solutions (NbS) can effectively address climate risks while supporting biodiversity and sustainable livelihoods. Despite challenges such as adverse weather and limited private sector involvement, the initiative achieved success through inclusive governance, community ownership, GPS-based monitoring, and women-led livelihood groups in agroforestry and aquaculture.
