School-Led Climate Action

School-Led Climate Action presents a case study of UN-Habitat Myanmar’s innovative initiative, implemented under the Myanmar Climate Change Alliance Phase 2 (MCCA2) and funded by the European Union, aimed at empowering children and youth in monastic schools to lead community-based climate resilience efforts. Recognizing schools as central hubs of community life—particularly in politically sensitive and climate-vulnerable regions—the programme engaged nearly 1,000 students and 68 teachers through participatory awareness sessions, the formation of Eco Clubs, and the implementation of School-Led Climate Action Plans tailored to local risks and needs.

By integrating environmental education with practical action, the initiative facilitated tangible projects such as rainwater harvesting systems, tree planting, solar energy installations, and flood-resilient shelters, using locally available and sustainable materials. The publication underscores how student-led activities foster long-term climate resilience, social cohesion, and inclusive development while offering a scalable framework for future education-based climate action in Myanmar.
