Mangroves are important for the livelihoods of the community as well as for protection from strong winds and flooding. Mangroves can help the ecosystem and humans by protecting coastal areas, acting as a carbon sink, filtering water, providing recreation and culture, and producing fish. Raising awareness of the importance of mangroves is critical to mitigate the impacts of climate change in coastal communities.
People living in poverty are increasingly vulnerable as a result of climate change and biodiversity loss. The recently conducted UN Biodiversity Conference (COP 15) promoted an agreement on biodiversity protection that takes into account the eradication of poverty and , “The Mangrove Breakthrough”, a call to action was launched in UNFCCC COP27 concluded in Egypt to conserve and restore mangroves as nature-based solutions.
Under EU’s nature and climate action campaign #ForOurPlanet, EU funded Myanmar Climate Change Alliance (MCCA2) programme promotes building the climate resilience of communities in Myanmar through mangrove protection and restoration.
