SHORT FILM COMPETITION: BEATING PLASTIC POLLUTION

Calling Myanmar youth aged 16-25 to participate in a Short Film Competition, organized by UN-Habitat in collaboration with AES Myanmar – Creative Media Institute and Prevent Plastic. The competition theme is Beating Plastic Pollution.

World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated annually on June 5 and encourages awareness and action for the protection of the environment. World Environment Day is a global platform for public outreach, with participation from over 143 countries annually. Each year, the program provides a theme and forum for businesses, non-government organizations, communities, governments, and celebrities to advocate environmental causes.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of World Environment Day, and the theme is solutions to plastic pollution, using the hashtag and slogan #BeatPlasticPollution. World Environment Day 2023 is a reminder that people’s actions on plastic pollution matter. The steps environmental activists, institutions, and businesses are taking to tackle plastic pollution are the consequence of this action. It is time to accelerate this action and transition to a circular economy. It is time to #BeatPlasticPollution.

World Environment Day 2023 will focus on alarming issues to be considered and addressed, including how plastic pollution is a growing threat in all ecosystems, from source to sea, and how our planet is choking on plastic. It’s time for change.

UN-Habitat chairs the Myanmar Climate Action Network (M-CAN), a network of non-state climate actors to raise voices on addressing climate concerns and take urgent climate actions. M-CAN has 27 organizations including UN agencies, INGOs, local NGOs/CSOs, research institutes, the private sector and individuals representing voices of various groups.

In collaboration with partner organizations, UN-Habitat will organize a #BeatPlasticPollution campaign, and these activities may include organizing community clean-ups, publishing social media messages, a short video competition, an article for WED, and a virtual dialogue on plastic pollution and the environment.

The WED event and campaign aim to 1) advocate for enterprises, including SMEs, local businesses, markets, and tourism, to incorporate plastic reduction and recycling into their business management; 2) empower local communities in waste management and plastic pollution reduction; and 3) raise public awareness about plastic pollution and its environmental impact.

As part of the WED activities, a short film video competition will be organized. The purpose is to raise public awareness about plastic issues, impacts, and solutions, and through video messages, change communities’ behaviors towards plastic waste management.

Winning submissions will be featured on the UN-Habitat Myanmar website (www.unhabitat.org.mm), and the Facebook pages of UN-Habitat Myanmar, AES Myanmar, and Prevent Plastic.

Please refer to the submission guidelines and terms and conditions before entering the competition.
